Movie Review: “Dead Story” Is The Pits

[yasr_overall_rating]

A young couple moves into their dream house, only to find out they are not alone.

Spoilers Ahead!

Summary

Anne and Harold, a young couple, buy a farmhouse that’s been on the market for five years. After inviting some friends over for dinner, they start telling a story about the house they just bought and the spirit of a dead woman who supposedly haunts the property. Anne begins to see this ghost in her dreams and in her reality. The ghost possesses Anne as she swipes him and almost stabs him. Harold, frightened, calls for a psychologist. Both of them disclaim her accountability and pronounce her crazy. Harold’s mom is added into the mix and stirs more family drama between them. In the end, however, Harold and his mother are both viciously killed by the ghost. Anne is nowhere to be found and eventually, the house is put back on the market.

Story/Screenplay/Writing 1/5

I understand it wants to tell a ghost story, but one-dimensional characters who are brusque or blah, are not the recommended path. For example, Harold’s mother didn’t hold any substance that was unique. We have some characters who are in this movie and the only material provided is in minute amounts. It amazes me how dreadful and cheap the writing is.

Technical 3/5

The setting, lighting, and sound were acceptable. I didn’t have any issue besides that the house was the only thing in the movie with actual character.

Overall 1.5

It’s strange to me that they would pick one story and build an entire movie off of one basis. Especially when that story comes from a character who isn’t mentioned after the opening scene in which he appears and then provides nothing else to the movie. This film is humdrum trite to sit through. It’s cheap direction and writing really backlashes itself. I wouldn’t recommend this film.
