DVD Review: “Step” Strides Towards Greatness

“The movie is astounding from start to finish. While stepping is a constant theme, it is used to show the dedication these girls bring to improving their lives.”

“Step” documents the senior year of a girls’ high-school step dance team against the background of inner-city Baltimore.

The senior year of a girls’ high school step team in inner-city Baltimore is documented, as they try to become the first in their families to attend college. The girls strive to make their dancing a success against the backdrop of social unrest.

The documentary, directed by Amanda Lipitz, follows the girls through the trials and tribulations of being young African American girls struggling to rise above their environment and join the ranks of greatness. All does not go smoothly as financial troubles, grades slipping, and parental issues threaten the progress these women have made.

The movie is astounding from start to finish. While stepping is a constant theme, it is used to show the dedication these girls bring to improving their lives. There were moments where the audience cried out in excitement and when the tears were rolling.

The cinematography, background music, and of course, the stepping routines were sheer perfection. If you want to watch a feel-good documentary, then this is one not to miss.

Available on DVD & Digital HD Tuesday, October 17th
