“America’s favorite hillbilly family is back with Michael, his fierce but loving grandma Mema, aunt Dee Dee and her fiancé Paul and uncle John who traded in their simple country living in rural Georgia for the bright lights of Hollywood.
“Hollywood Hillbillies” is a show my wife likes to watch from time to time so when I was given the opportunity to review the first episode from the upcoming Season 3, I was somewhat familiar with the characters involved. As the show begins, Michael, his Grandma Mema and Uncle John are all getting ready for Michael’s Aunt Dee Dee’s wedding to her fiancé Paul. Both Mema and Dee Dee go to a Hollywood Spa where Mema proceeds to enter the public hot tub completely naked, much to Dee Dee’s embarrassment and the surprise of the other patrons already sitting in it.
For the guys, Michael and his Uncle John take Paul to a bowling alley for his bachelor party and after a while, Paul proves to be ‘the man,’ winning every game they play but then they move the party upstairs to the VIP Room at which point, a female police office enters the room, arrests Paul and then proceeds to strip down and flaunt her stuff in his face. Meanwhile, Mema, Dee Dee and some of her friends from out of town meet at their place to take her out to her bachelorette party where muscular, almost-naked guys proceed to flaunt their junk, much to her delight.
While a lot of these ‘reality’ shows claim to be exactly that, ‘real,’ it’s pretty obvious that there is a lot of orchestrated drama going on but I have to admit, “Hollywood Hillbillies” is fun because we are witnessing a group of country folk from Georgia who have absolutely no idea how Hollywood operates so what better way for them to learn than throwing them in the deep end and letting the audience watch everything as it unfolds? The highlight of this episode is watching Michael being given the opportunity to perform live for the first time with rap legend Too $hort.
