TV Review: “Foxy & Co.” Is Campy Fun

Popular former “Face Off” contestant Eric Fox (aka Foxy) is joined by Face Off contestants Nicole Chilelli, RJ Haddy and Roy Wooley as he attempts to start his own make-up effects studio.

The thing with reality TV is, once a show makes its mark and thrives, it breaks away from the conventional mold and once that happens, every other network clamors to follow suit. “Face Off” was introduced to audiences by SyFy and was very successful. In it, a group of prosthetic makeup artists compete against each other to create prostheses such as those found in science fiction and horror films. In Syfy’s latest ‘behind-the-scenes’ movie and TV make-up show, “Foxy & Co.”, we are introduced to former “Face Off” contestants Eric Fox (Foxy), Nicole Chilelli, RJ Haddy and Roy Wooley as they attempt to help Eric start his own make-up effects studio.

First up is the special effects on a low-budget comical zombie movie called “Zack the Zombie Exterminator” which they have been hired to do. They have to create a huge zombie called Junkyard Joe who the director of the movie, Brian Pulido, decides tried to swallow a dog whole and our team concludes that they want to show Joe with the dog’s tail protruding out of his mouth while the dog’s head is extruding out of his stomach. They also have to create a weapon made out of common household items that will decapitate a zombie and they have to do the special effects for that too. Nicole however, meets with Susan Komen L.A. and presents her idea for a character that will represent the company in an upcoming photo shoot as someone who can beat cancer and once they give her the job, she creates an almost superhero style character, dressed in pink.

The one thing I’ve noticed with most of these shows, is that they always add tension and suspense by telling us, the audience, that they have a certain amount of time in which they have to get the desired effect completed and this show is no different. When they’re all on location at a junkyard shooting the zombie movie, we constantly gets shots of the director yelling and letting everyone know that they’re running out of daylight and to hurry, hurry, hurry. Most of these shows get their desired effects completed in plenty of time but for the TV audience, they like to add the suspense of making them think that they might actually not get it done in time.

In the end, both the zombie movie and the Susan Komen character are completed before the end credits roll but along the way, they all encounter their fair share of problems and issues. Of course, this being the kind of show it is, wouldn’t be as successful if they got everything done on the first try so watching them having to improvise, especially when it’s so close to crunch time, is always engaging and fun. If you’re a fan of Syfy’s “Face Off”, chances are you’ll like this one too.

Airs on Syfy, Tuesday, March 18th at 10/9c
