Theatre Review: “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale”

[yasr_overall_rating]

On the edge of glory, the evil Lady Za Za is determined to rule the kingdom. She is keeping the beautiful long haired Princess Rapunzel in a tower in the deep, dark, dank, dismal, dreary, forest. It’s up to Sir Roderick and his hair stylist friend, Edgar, to save Princess Rapunzel and restore the kingdom. Along the way, they get help from a slightly neurotic gypsy woman (isn’t there one in every fairy tale?) and an old dragon named Socrates who has lost his ‘poof’!

Artisan Center Theater continues their 2015 season of children’s shows with a very clever and funny twist on a classic fairy tale. The traditional role of the evil witch has been replaced with the (only slightly scary) comical Lady Za Za. The knight in shinning armor is replaced with the dashing duo of Sir Roderick – who wants to rescue a maiden – and his best friend Edgar, the hair dresser who is in search of the perfect head of hair. Even the dragon that guards Rapunzel’s tower is sweet and endearing to the children in the audience. Original music and choreography add to the charm and brilliance that Artisan offers its patrons.

This is absolutely a show for all ages. The clever one liners and Disney references kept me giggling, while the smart choreography and characterizations had me truly entertained. It is rare that I can be at a show designed for children and see just as many parents and grandparents equally as entertained as the children.

Be prepared to be pulled into the action on stage, as characters break the fourth wall to involve the audience. We are encouraged to cheer, boo and give advice to the characters throughout the show. As per Artisan’s tradition with their children’s productions, the audience is included in the magic that is theatre with hopes of inspiring a life long love of theatre in its youngest attendants.

“Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale” will be on stage till September 5th but shows are selling out quickly. For more information, please check out their website at http://artisanct.com

Next in their line up will be Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” September 18th – October 17th. Also on the horizon is the first annual Princess Ball on October 7th where your young princes and princesses can dine and dance the night away with Princess Jazmin and a full cast of fairy tale surprises.
