Theatre Review: “Pippin” Is A Magical, Mesmerizing Tale

“Pippin” is a high-flying, death-defying hit musical full of extraordinary acrobatics, wondrous magical feats and soaring songs from the composer of “Wicked.”

I love attending the evening summer musicals at The Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas. They are always such fantastic events that allow me to catch a break from the humidity soaked skies and relish in an always fun and entertaining theater experience; however, I was fairly unfamiliar with the story of “Pippin.” I did some research and got a vague idea of what it was about—a prince, his desire to find his purpose in life, and a lot of acrobats were to be involved in the process..Meh. I didn’t know what I was in store for!

Oh. My. Goodness. No research or review could have adequately prepared me for the visual smorgasbord that I experienced. The story was fantastic, that of the aforementioned young prince on a quest for the meaning of life and in the process discovers the grandiose of his expectations to be much over-rated. In the end we are reminded of what really matters in this life. It was a thought-provoking and haunting tale and had its dark moments. However, it was filled with tremendous wit, humor and fantastic dialogue. Together, with the actors, score, and acrobats (The Players), the production was so sensational I will forever rave about it.

Every scene came with incredible acrobatic talent that left me thinking I should really have buckled down in yoga class. The skills The Players demonstrated were enthralling and gripping with real, “How the heck did they do THAT?” sort of moments. I was mesmerized by The Players, scene after scene; I was so consumed with what they were doing that at times my eyes didn’t know where to focus because there were too many cool things happening! The gymnastics and acrobatic skill were incredible and were the anchor to this event. The costumes were outstanding, especially the costume changes that took place in less than a blink of an eye.

Next up! The actors. Just fantastic. Known simply as the “Leading Player” (Sasha Allen) plays the part beautifully and has a strong, powerful voice. It is no wonder that she was amongst the Top 5 on NBC’s “The Voice,” in season 5. Her bravado as emcee to Pippin’s life is big and bold. Pippin’s father, Charles (John Rubinstein,) is the lovable, silly king that compliments his new wife’s, Fastrada (Sabrina Harper,) sexy dance moves. Lewis (Erik Altemus), plays Pippin’s step-brother with bluster and swagger. The surprise performance of the sensual Berthe (Adrienne Barbeau,) Pippin’s grandmother, is outstanding. And Pippin’s love, Catherine (Kristine Reese,) is endearing and charming especially when she is lectured by the Leading Player.

Ah, and then there is Pippin (Sam Lips,) whose story thus do tell. Humble and unpretentious, he just wants to find meaning for his existence. Theo (Stephen Sayegh,) is the adorable step-son to Catherine and ends the show with a sweet song.

The music (and you always want to go into a musical familiar with the musical) was outstanding! I did not educate myself on the score beforehand but so much loved every song that I have added them all to my music repertoire. Everything about this show, including the moments of audience interaction, was terrific. “Pippin,” a four-time Emmy Award winner, deserves the highest praise for production, talent, and screenplay.

“Pippin” is now playing at the Music Hall at Fair Park thru July 19th and then moves to the Bass Performance Hall July 21-26
