Theatre Review: “Cinderella” Is Charming & Magical Entertainment For All Ages

[yasr_overall_rating]

With its fresh new take on the beloved tale of a young woman who is transformed from a chambermaid into a princess, this hilarious and romantic fairytale combines the story’s classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball along with some surprising twists!

This was an absolutely delightful evening at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas. The theater, packed with little Cinderellas eager to see the show, was filled with high energy and excitement. Just the right atmosphere for this magical fairy tale to come to life and it did not disappoint. “Cinderella,” of course, is a tale that has been told through books, film, and stage, but this particular version has a unique style and twist that makes it stand out in the realm of abundant Cinderella tales.

This is a charming show for young Cinderella fans (and many were there in dress and tiara) but the (political) humor is aimed for the older audience and I felt it was pitched oddly and fell flat many times. However, this does not take away from the cast performance which was spectacular and the storyline was certainly different than what I had expected. A kind step-sister? A town crier calling for justice for the people? Yeah, that’s a different “Cinderella,” but in a refreshing way.

Much of the music is familiar and I very much enjoyed the oldies that I remembered from my girlhood. The orchestra was incredible and I truly believe they are the unsung heroes of the musical score. The choreographed songs were done with much precision and style that it was amazing to watch.

What was most impressive was the set and costume changes. I heard many stunned gasps (myself included) as Cinderella turned from rags to princess; pumpkins turned into golden carriages and (my favorite) raccoons into McSteamys…I mean horsemen! This was a very well-done show and I enjoyed the nostalgia updated for today’s audience.

“Cinderella” plays at the Music Hall at Fair Park June 9-21 and at Bass Performance Hall June 23-28
