“Station To Station” is a living project exploring modern creativity. Over 24 days, “Station To Station” traveled 4,000 miles by train from the Atlantic to the Pacific. An evolving group of artists, musicians, and performers took part in a series of unique happenings. “Station To Station,” the feature film, premiered recently at the Sundance Film Festival 2015.

Sending a burning arrow into the stunting effects that the compartmentalization of culture has on how creativity manifests, visual artist Doug Aitken embarked on an experiment exploring a less materialistic and more nomadic direction of art creation, exhibition, and participation. “Station To Station” involved a train that crossed North America housing a constantly changing creative community including artists, musicians, and writers, who collaborated in the creation of recordings, artworks, and 10 unique happenings, across the country.

A high-speed road trip through modern ideas, the formally innovative film “Station To Station” is composed of 61 individual one-minute films that feature conversations, intimate moments on the train, performances and indelible moments of the journey such as Beck performing with a gospel choir in the Mojave desert, Ed Ruscha talking about exploring the great American landscape, and a marching band performing Sun Ra’s “Space is the Place” in Chicago’s Union Station. “Station To “Station” is a kaleidoscope of experience and artistic production, as much as it is a story of our evolving creative culture.

Featuring Doug Aitken, Cold Cave, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Thurston Moore, Patti Smith, Olafur Eliasson, Urs Fischer, Christian Jankowski, Ernesto Neto, Dan Deacon, Gary Indiana, William Eggleston, Ed Ruscha, Beck, Cat Power, Giorgio Moroder, Paolo Soleri, Stephen Shore, Suicide, Savages, among many others.

Doug Aitken stated, “‘Station To Station’ takes a journey across the modern creative landscape through a diverse range of perspectives and voices. The film captures and shares a series of unrepeatable moments that allow an audience to discover something larger about themselves and be a part of it. We’re excited to be working with Submarine Deluxe to bring the film to the US audience.”

David Koh & Dan Braun of Submarine Deluxe stated, “We are excited and honored to work with Doug on finding an innovative way to distribute his unique and visually stunning film. He has curated some of our favorite musicians and artists to collaborate with him and has beautifully documented it all in “Station To Station” with a powerful 1 minute structure that moves at a bold pace and is perfect for today’s audience.”
