Rover Dramawerks Announces Auditions For 365 Women A Year Festival

Auditions:

Saturday, February 18 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm
Sunday, February 19 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm

Auditions will be at Rover Dramawerks, 221 W. Parker Road, Suite 580 in Plano, at the northwest corner of 75 and Parker Rd. in the Ruisseau Village Shopping Center.

Brief Synopses:

Rover is pleased to present 12 short plays by playwrights all over the United States for our third annual 365 Women a Year Festival. Directors are looking for an ensemble of ethnically diverse actors (male and female) to fill various roles.

Roles: about 10 men and 30 women, ages 10+:

 

The Anesthetic Was Psalms by Nancy Gall-Clayton

JANE TODD CRAWFORD: (Female/47), married to a farmer, mother of five, brave, (1763-1842)

EPHRAIM McDOWELL: (Male/38), medical doctor and surgeon of Scotch ancestry, also brave

SARAH SHELBY McDOWELL: (Female/25), Dr. McDowell’s wife, daughter of Kentucky’s first governor, resourceful, nervous

 

Curtain Rods by J. Sanders Nelson

CHARLIE: Middle aged black family man, disappointed at his position in life, but taking it all in stride.

LEE: Young 20s-something white male who seems disillusioned with his life

MARINA: alienated wife of Lee

NITA: Charlie’s wife. Sympathetic

 

The Deaths of Anna May Wong by Anne V. McGravie

BRENDA: American Teenager, fan of Anna May Wong whose mother is dying, watching film for a purpose – F

OLIVE: Brenda’s friend (American), fan of Miss Crawford but watching Anna May Wong film to support Brenda – F

VOICE IN AUDIENCE: Chastises Olive for talking through movie – M

CHARLES CRABBIT: Sea captain, Mrs. Crabbit’s son, engaged to Evangeline for five years; has a dry humor that helps him deal with what seems to be his inevitable fate of life with his mother and Evangeline. – M

MRS. CRABBIT: Owner of Seven Seas Shipping line and Bristol (England) society matron; cold natured and rigid. – F

EVANGELINE: English fiancée of Charles for the last 5 years; frail, clingy and dull. Loves Charles in her own tightly drawn way. – F

LADY MEI LI: Anna May Wong’s role… lady of wealth and position whom Charles marries and brings back to Bristol; her upbringing has not prepared her for living among foreigners, particularly when they are ignorant of but bigoted to foreigners. Loves Charles but has no understanding of him or his world. – Asian F

 

Herstorical Pen-Pals by Caroline Turner Cole

HARRIET HANSON: Born 1825, Female, Age 10

HEATHER RACHEL CORNING: Born 2004, Female, Age 12

MR. THOMAS/FOREMAN: Harriet’s teacher in school; a public school 7th-grade history teacher; factory foreman

MOTHER/MOM: Doubles as both Harriet and Heather’s mother

MICHELLE/FACTORY WORKER/FACEBOOK ADULT

 

Hitler’s Whore by Jim Colgan

ALBERT SPEER: One of Hitler’s closest associates, but more quiet, intelligent, and thoughtful than the typical Nazi thug. He is in his early 40s, tall and handsome, though his face shows the stress of his imprisonment.

EVA BRAUN: When the play opens, Eva is 26, slender, pretty, with stylish blond hair. She matures during the play, but always retains her good looks, figure, and stylish dress.

ILSA: The only fictional character in the play, Ilsa is in her late forties, plump, genial, always wears a traditional maid’s uniform. She ages noticeably as the play progresses.

MAGDA GOEBBELS: Wife of Josef Goebbels, one of Adolf Hitler’s most infamous associates. Magda is in her mid-thirties when the play opens, attractive and sensual, but stern and haughty. She is always well but conservatively dressed. She is a fierce supporter of the Nazi Party and a great admirer of Hitler.

FANNIE TUTTLE: her daughter, 26 F

Little Swan, a Pas de Deux by Allie Costa

ANNA PAVLOVA: 24. Ballerina. Graceful and kind. Dark hair.

MADAME: 49. Former ballerina. Recently became ill. Dark hair.

MARGUERITE: Adult female. Stage manager. Offstage voice.

AGATHA CHRISTIE: 25 F

ARCHIE CHRISTIE: 17 M. Her husband. An office of the Royal Flying Corps

 

No Limits by Carol M. Rice

MO’NE DAVIS: age 13 (African American) F

JACKIE MITCHELL: age 17 (Caucasian) F

EFFA MANLEY: around 50 (indeterminate race but should pass for white) F

 

Return to Sender (The Minnie Cox Story) by Rita Anderson

MINNIE COX: First female African-American Postmaster, 1880s-1900s. Resilient, poised, driven.

OLA: Choctaw princess that Indianola’s named after. Timeless seer from another era. F

JAMES VARDAMAN: white supremacist, editor of local paper, became governor of Mississippi. Self-proclaimed “Redneck.” M

MRS. ALICE DAWSON: white citizen of Indianola, Minnie’s friend. F

PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT: Teddy Roosevelt. M

 

Actors will be considered for multiple shows and roles.
