Movie Review: Yearning Meets Laughable Pain In “Attack Of The Killer Donuts”

A chemical accident turns ordinary donuts into bloodthirsty killers. Now it’s up to Johnny, Michelle, and Howard to save their sleepy town from…Killer Donuts.

Laughter reigns supreme in this horrific romantic comedy. Romantic comedies are always a plus in my book but the mixture of horror and comedy will forever be a strange marriage. The bonding of the two unions is usually mixed with a lack of depth and overselling. “Attack of the Killer Donuts” manages to miss both of those pitfalls as it develops into a solid film. Good acting elevates a murderous storyline to make this film a different type of killer.

“Attack of the Killer Donuts” follows the story of two friends as they work at a donut shop. Justin Ray stars in this film as the quirky Johnny Wentworth. Johnny works at Dandy Donuts with his childhood friend Michelle, played by Kayla Compton. Michelle and Johnny are good friends and she has stood by Johnny’s side for years as he deals with his colorful family. Johnny’s mom and mad scientist uncle Luther help keep Johnny’s life filled with surprises and adventure. The love Johnny and Michelle share in this film is superlative.

The film is a very “Scary Movie” type film, but its originality keeps it fresh. Johnny’s best friend Howard, played by Ben Heyman, is a hoot and surprisingly more awkward than Johnny. The story mixes romance, comedy, and horror nicely as blood is craved by the killer donuts. The mood is nice and wholesome as the film finds it around the middle transition. However, there is nothing subtle about the crazed killer donuts.

This movie has a pleasant look and the make of the killer donuts is satisfactory. The film is set in a seemingly normal small town where the members of the community all seem to know each other well and have developed relationships together. The storyline definitely is thought out and it shows in the film. The relationships amongst characters are clearly established and they all display some type of affection towards each other. Emotional empathy was something I never expected to be sprinkled over my donuts, but I also never expected them to be killers.

“Attack of the Killer Donuts” is a good movie. I personally think viewers will enjoy this film and find some memorable moments. The acting is good and the storyline makes sense. The flow of the movie never feels stagnant and all the characters have a purpose. This film never gets overly serious and is fun to watch. The donuts are killers and the characters have heart. The battle for town dominance is set as the killer donuts begin to attack.
