Movie Review: “The Wedding Invitation” Needs A Divorce From Its Writer

[yasr_overall_rating]

Three best friends endure heartbreak, humiliation, and hangovers to get dates for the wedding of a lifetime.

“The Wedding Invitation” is a failed attempt at a classic romantic comedy, filled with poor acting choices, bad directing, and an even worse script. The tried and true method of the rom-com script factory missed the mark for this film creating 91 minutes of clichés and boredom.

The premise had promise, an overly organized and controlling, yet socially awkward girl thinks she is getting engaged when really her boyfriend plans to break up with her. She then decides to go to the popular girls wedding which will make her cool by association, with her two best friends and has four days to find a date. Through many failed attempts at finding that perfect wedding date, she finally finds love that was in front of her face the whole time.

The writer, Rainy Kerwin, took no chances that the viewer would not understand the plot and quite literally had the characters say the plot of the moment out loud as if spoon feeding information to a two-year-old. If that wasn’t strange enough, there were times when the director, also Rainy Kerwin, felt the need to point us in the direction of what we are supposed to view at that moment rather than trust that the average film viewer could follow along with the simple plot without the need of over exaggerated assistance. The only thing missing was a large neon arrow on the screen pointing us at what she wanted us to see.

The acting performances were decent for the script they were given. Eoin Macken conquered being the love interest, Graham, easily and was the clichéd quirky indy guy that girls dream about.

The redeeming qualities of the film were that the clothes were cute and the fifties style jazz soundtrack was entertaining. Beyond that, “The Wedding Invitation” is a movie you can easily miss seeing and still hold on to your rom-com lover card.

Available on VOD June 6th
