Movie Review: “Valley Uprising” Takes Mountain Climbing To A Whole New Level

[yasr_overall_rating]

In the shady campgrounds of Yosemite valley, climbers carved out a counterculture lifestyle of dumpster-diving and wild parties that clashed with the conservative values of the National Park Service. And up on the walls, generation after generation has pushed the limits of climbing, vying amongst each other for supremacy on Yosemite’s cliffs.

Written and Directed by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen, this award-winning documentary gives us a picturesque view of Yosemite Valley and the history of its rock-climbing pioneers. Over 60 years of legendary climbs have been showcased capturing the true spirit of groups of fearless individuals who have pursued excellence by defying the odds of nature and their competitors.

No details are spared as individual techniques, occupational hazards, and ongoing feuds are being shared to describe the passion and dedication of climbers whose main goal is to feed their lofty egos by defying gravity. With Yosemite National Park as the proving ground, the documentary follows legends Royal Robbins and Warren Harding in their pursuit of scaling the Half Dome, El Capitan and the Dawn Wall, the highest and most challenging mountains in the park.

With the passing of time and changes in the sport itself, the proving ground of Yosemite becomes more vulnerable for the climbers, and for a period of time the climbing frenzy goes on hiatus. After a rebirth, the sport regains its popularity, yet the challenges of sharing the park with four million other tourists becomes an Achilles heel for the Park Rangers who must enforce rules, and the climbers who must still find a way to exercise their unbridled passion in their storied territory. Valley Uprising explores all facets of the world of rock climbing and the pioneering spirit that continues to catapult the sport today.
