Movie Review: “Thumper” Finds Its Groove As A Teenage Drama

[yasr_overall_rating]

Teens in a low-income neighborhood are lured into working for a violent and dangerous drug dealer. When a new girl harboring a dark secret arrives in town, their relationship jeopardizes everything.

A group of teens enjoy their daily lives as they party in “Thumper.” They party hard, continuing daily from morning to night. Drama and crime help the story develop into a cool film. The mix of crime, drama, and love always sets the right mood. That’s exactly what we get with “Thumper.”

The movie follows the life of Kat (Eliza Taylor) as she tries to live a normal high school life. Kat, like most high schoolers, is not on perfect terms with her mom. This leads her to experimenting with parties and drugs with her friend Gina (Jazzy De Lisser). Kat eventually meets Beaver (Daniel Webber) after he cheats off her work in class. Beaver invites Kat further into the party life. This is where she meets Troy (Grant Harvey), the local bad boy that runs drugs for his cousin Wyatt (Pablo Schreiber). This film gets juicy quickly.

The teenage drama storytelling behind this film is awesome. “Thumper” gives me the same feeling as watching a good “Breaking Bad” episode. The scenery is dusty and screams “fix my life!” The sounds and mood of this movie are hopeful, hopeful for better days and a better lifestyle.

As the film continues, “Thumper” becomes tenser. The situations turn from being fun and light-hearted to serious. More life issues are discussed and we begin to truly find out who these characters are. The camera work is crisp and the movie is well-directed. “Thumper” tells its story in an overwrought way.

I liked this film overall but felt that it ended way too quickly as I wanted to know exactly what happened to more of the characters. It eventually zeroed in on Kat as being the main character but continued including everyone else up until the end before going back to being all about Kat. “Thumper” left me hanging dry in that regard, but overall, it still manages to be a solid film.

Now playing in select theaters
