Movie Review: The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” Is Quirky And Fun With Great Music

The Beatles agree to accompany Captain Fred in his Yellow Submarine and go to Pepperland to free it from the music-hating Blue Meanies.

If you have never heard of this film and are expecting a documentary about The Beatles, that is not what you are going to get. This is a 1968 animated movie with a great message that is inspired by The Beatles music.

The intro was far too long for me, but if you can get past it and to find out what the real plot is, I promise the rest of the film is entertaining. It begins like most animated films, in a beautiful happy place. This one is called Pepper-land, where everyone loves music. It gets invaded by horrible blue mean people (Blue Meanies) who freeze everyone. One man name Fred happens to escape. He encounters the Lord of Pepperland who gives him a yellow submarine and instructs him to go find The Beatles to help.

Off Fred goes in his yellow submarine to look for The Beatles. He first encounters Jeremy Hilary Boob who is an Eccentric poet/wordsmith/ and everything he says has to rhyme. Throughout the journey there are so many odd and funny characters he encounters, my favorite was a pair of stomping socks and the bird with a suction beak that can even suck himself up to nothing, I actually think he did. When he finally finds all of The Beatles, they get into the submarine and that’s when the film actually takes off. After a very long submarine ride, many funny mishaps due to pressing wrong buttons, losing one of the Beatles then finding him again, we get finally make it back to Pepperland.

In the end, we find out that the only thing that can destroy the Blue Meanies is music. When The Beatles start to sing, they have no chance. The Beatles sings everyone out of their frozen state and forgive the BlueMeanies, even asking them to join in being kind. There are so many great things about this film but what stood out were the many jokes, the animation style, but most of all, it has a powerful message about how music can uplift all of us and how forgiveness can too. Great for all ages!

“Yellow Submarine” hits theaters across North America July 9th in celebration of its 50th anniversary
