In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.

Sony pictures have done it again! Taken us back to the blue fantastical world of the Smurfs. In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy, and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a roller-coaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.

The popcorn is buttered, the soda is cold and my 10-year-old is all but holding her breath as the movie starts. Who’d have thought that a beloved part of my 1980s childhood would make its way back into the high tech fast moving world of 2017! With all the charm, lovable innocence and fun that brought the little blue guys back to life and into the public eye in 2011, Sony films has doubled the love for the iconic characters and given the public a completely new and fantastic Smurf adventure.

As with most grand adventures, a map is involved. This time, however, it will not be leading us to the lost city of El Dorado, the treasure of the Ark of the Covenant, or Caribbean pirate treasure. It will lead us to the lost Smurf city. The race to get there before the evil wizard Gargamel makes for a fun and exciting story. There are just enough strange and dangerous parts of the journey through the Forbidden Forest to keep the younger audience members excited but not scared, and enough funny one liners to keep the grown-ups from wanting to sneak a peek at their phones.

As with most animation through the years, computer enhanced dimension, color, and detail have brought “Smurfs: The Lost Village” a vivid 3D quality.

Where the “Lost Village” Smurfs are concerned, it was fun to have them turn out to be an Amazon-ish style of community. Fun to have there be one Smurf community of boy Smurfs, and one of girls. Without forgetting, of course, that Smurfette is not a “real” Smurf, but originally a creation of Gargamel’s. Happily, the love and magic that makes a Smurf heart as honest, loyal, and true as it is, gives the audience a chance to be told a story of what true friendship, compassion, and honest love can create.

For as lovable and fun as this movie is, I have to say that I don’t see it entertaining above a 5th-grade audience unless a grown up is there with their favorite little person. It’s fun, entertaining, and a good bucket of giggles for sure, but simply not for much older than the pre-teen crowd.

In theaters Friday, April 7th
