Movie Review: “Shirin In Love” Is A Corny Romantic Comedy With Charm

Despite being engaged for years to a successful Iranian plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, Shirin, an absent-minded, young Iranian-American living in the Los Angeles area, finds herself breaking loyalty and tradition when she falls in love with a mysterious young man who lives in a lighthouse in northern California.

“Shirin in Love” is a corny romantic comedy with charm. Nazanin Boniadi plays a young and clumsy Iranian women, who is having second thoughts about getting married. Boniadi’s character Shirin lives with her overbearing mother and is overqualified for her job. She plays her character well, however there is nothing memorable about her performance.

The film lacks focus and the plot is driven by unrealistic coincidences. The film has funny moments but nothing distinguishes it from other films of the same genre. Shirin’s love interest is the son of a novelist, a shut-in that has a well kept secret. Riley Smith plays the son and the secret that his character shares with his mother Rachel is the driving force behind the story.

Unfortunately, this plot element is introduced late into the film. Amy Madigan plays Rachel and her performance is the most enjoyable. It isn’t a perfect performance but she seems to enjoy herself and her attitude emanates from her performance. She provides the viewers with some of the funnier moments in the film. Maz Jobrani also gives a good performance, though there is a pause after some of his lines that might leave some waiting for the sound of an audience laughing, like in an old sitcom.

Marshall Manesh plays Shirin’s father, Nadar, who is empathetic and passive. His performance is one of the stronger aspects of the film and provides the viewers with a few laughs. The film could have been better paced and would be more enjoyable if it was shorter.
