Movie Review: “Sharknado: Rifftrax Version” Turns The Film Into An Instant Classic

When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, nature’s deadliest killer rules sea, land, and air as thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace.

Let me state this up front: I never saw “Sharknado.” Not on TV, on DVD nor at the theaters when the movie got a theatrical re-release because of its popularity. There was absolutely nothing appealing about it so I think it’s very fitting that the first time I viewed it, the guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 tore it apart and that’s a good thing because if I had watched it on its own, it would have been turned off about 15 minutes in. There are so many bad movies out there and I’m not talking funny bad, I’m talking ‘bad’ bad and “Sharknado” falls into that category. I even watched the opening of “Sharknado 2: The Second One” and guess what? Yup! I turned it off 15 minutes in.

What semblance of a story there is, revolves around a storm moving up from Mexico to the United States and it becomes so big, it begins to produce severe updrafts which, in turn, produce tornadoes and since they have formed out over the ocean (I know, all logic is thrown out the window here), tornadoes begin popping up everywhere and as they make their way inland, they manage to extract every type of shark imaginable from the ocean and they attack anyone and everyone who gets in their way. If you try to utilize logic with this movie, your brain will explode at the sheer amount of implausibility and non-sensical situations our central characters constantly find themselves in.

The guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 should be required by law to riff any bad movie that is released to the general public. On second thought, there are so many bad movies released every single year they wouldn’t be able to keep up but with “Sharknado,” I found myself laughing out loud constantly and for me, that never happens. I have a great sense of humor but when it comes to movies trying to make me laugh, it takes a lot but after viewing Mystery Science Theater 3000’s version of “Sharknado,” I’ll be checking out more of their riffs, including their upcoming take on the horrendous and absolutely abhorrent motion picture, “The Room.” now THAT should be hilarious!
