A sausage strives to discover the truth about his existence.
Just to be clear, this is an adult movie. In fact, I should go as far as saying a mature, adult movie. Almost twenty-four hours after viewing the movie, I am still at odds with whether this was a really clever way to exploit food with underlying themes of a socio-sexual revolution or a devil may care attitude of I’m just putting it out there and whatever happens, happens. Either way, the film has never-ending humor if you’re into extremely high doses of no holds barred, sex-filled conversation adorned with cursing and bullying, and can follow the punch lines that range from mild to overt displays of raunchiness from the likes of hot dogs, buns, douches and other grocery store items.
From the very beginning, behind the doors of Shopwell’s grocery, there is a mounting effort for Brenda Bunson (Kristen Wiig) and Frank (Seth Rogen) to get together on the other side. Their daily routine consists of singing an opening song where the goal of making it to the grocery carts of shoppers who are assumed to be taking them to “the great beyond,” keeps them focused and hopeful. Sexual tension and competition is high and undeniably biased as the products try individually and collectively to make it to the shopping cart from the shelves. All hell breaks loose when the cart takes a dangerous turn for the worse and the groceries are redirected to a living hell inside of Shopwell’s darkened doors. Real life issues are brought out in this movie as the groceries try to regroup. In the midst of it, they discover that the world they thought was outside was not the heaven they had hoped for.
Seth Rogen is brilliant in his working of this screenplay into the hands of Directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. To be a co-star and really make it work is even a greater piece of the pie that makes this adaption to film a departure from common ground into what appears to be uncharted territory. The additional characterizations from the likes of Selma Hayek, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and other talented actors make it worth the risk. While extremely for the open-minded, this film is well worth the adventure to witness the creativity of this project that commands your attention in a fast-paced, thrilling and nerve-racking environment that makes you giggle and be pornfully embarrassed all at the same time and all in the name of food.
