Movie Review: “Rond Ett” (Round One) Boxing Short Can’t Get Off The Ropes

[yasr_overall_rating]

Based on actual events.

“Rond Ett” (Round One) is a Swedish-made short about an amateur boxer named Tobbe getting ready for his first bout. Tobbe is first seen being berated for daydreaming by his overly aggressive trainer. Instead of being able to spar, he is forced to spend the rest of his session running outside. Tobbe must represent his Brotherhood’s boxing club for the upcoming match and his head and heart clearly lie elsewhere. We spend the day with him meeting his underdeveloped friends. He chastises his best friend Linus for being too cavalier about helping himself to food and milk. We later learn that Linus is living with his abusive mother and does not even provide enough food for him.

Tobbe’s face is in a constant anxious daze and his performance is pretty much one note. The production of the film was a bit stale and obviously low budget but didn’t try anything innovative or interesting. I liked the lighting and angles in the boxing ring but the overall story, acting, and pacing leaves much to be desired. I wasn’t sure what to take away from this story except be nice to our friends and don’t mess with alpha male fight clubs. I would expect more from a Swedish short but hopefully, the next round will be a real knockout.
