Movie Review: “God? The Almighty Question” Seeks The Supreme Answer

People from all walks of life are asked “What is God?”

Some documentaries ask questions that we legitimately want answers to: who really shot JFK? Was the moon landing authentic? Where is Jimmy Hoffa? Sadly, while many documentaries might very well introduce new evidence into old cases, mostly, they do not give us the answers we anticipated, instead, they end up asking even more questions. When I was afforded the opportunity to view “God? The Almighty Question,” I knew immediately there was not going to be a definitive answer because God, whether you believe in him or not, is totally subjective.

What director Peter Rodger has achieved, is a beautiful, scenic road trip around the world, from the U.S. to Australia, India to Japan and Israel to Kenya, to ask the same question to as many diverse people and religions as humanly possible and he receives answers as disparate as the people giving them. I found it fascinating listening to the assortment of divergent individuals give their personal views on God and their belief system in general, from Christians, Jews and Buddhists, to atheists, druids and radical Islamists, nobody is excluded.

Listening to the various children from around the world, they pretty much all believed the very same thing; that God was in heaven above, watching over all of us and that heaven was up in the sky and hell was down below. I remember thinking that way as a child too, when things were much simpler and there was just heaven and hell and we all knew we didn’t want to go down below. The question being asked here, “What is God?” begins to metamorphose into “What does God mean to you?” and this opens up a whole new myriad of answers.

Celebrities like Hugh Jackman, Ringo Starr, David Copperfield and Bob Geldof, to name but a few, talk about what they believe (or in some cases, don’t believe) and it shines a whole new perspective on them. You can’t help but look at some of them differently because while they may have played some of your favorite characters in movies or on TV, or sung some of your favorite songs, when you sit down with them in real life, and listen to what they have to say, it’s difficult not to disapprove, depending on their views and your standpoint.

One celebrity says people who believe in religion are stupid, or words to that effect and because I am a Christian myself, I take offense. If you don’t believe in God, I’m not going to judge you because of that, it’s not my place to judge and I expect the same from you but when you let me know what your convictions are and then proceed to condemn me because mine are different than yours, then we’re going to have a problem. I very strongly believe in God and by insulting me, you are insulting him and I am very protective of my God.

In the end, those interviewed in the movie are asked “What is God to you?” and most of them respond with “God is love.” I once had a heated conversation with a friend many years ago, he didn’t believe in God and said to me, “What if there is no God? Then nothing matters and we can do whatever we want here on earth.” My response? “What if there is a God and you live your whole life being selfish, thinking only of yourself and then one day, you die and end up standing before him? What will you do then?” Strangely, he had no response.

“God? The Almighty Question” is a film that dares to ask, “what is God to you?” and whether you believe in him or not, everyone seems to have an answer. Director Peter Rodger has created a thought-provoking film that keeps the conversation going long after the final credits have rolled and it’s been a very long time since a movie has achieved that effect. Highly Recommended.
