Movie Review: “Early Man” Is A Non-Stop Stop Motion Hit

[yasr_overall_rating]

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, Early Man tells the story of Dug, along with sidekick Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy Lord Nooth and his Bronze Age City to save their home.

See Dug. See Dug run. See Dug play with Hognob, his wild boar.

Dug (Eddie Redmayne) is a cleverly evolving boy living among a tribe of knuckle-dragging misfits who by sheer luck, managed to evade the asteroid that killed off all the dinosaurs. A few ages later, they have made their home in a crater of lush beautiful life while all around them is desolation. They are rabbit hunters and although Dug tries to encourage them to go for something more sufficient for their hunger, like, say, a mammoth, the tribal chief is hesitant to take on something so daunting.

Until one day, metal mammoths show up with bronze clad men to steal their home of rich resources from them. Thus enters the Bronze Age.

What follows next is a face-off between the Stoners and the Bronzers through, amusingly enough, a rousing match of futball. All this to determine who will be the rightful owners of the crater. Dug is determined to keep their home and the Frenchie Bronzers are sure that they’re already the best. Dug has several surprises in store for him as he rallies his hair-footed troops to what can only hope will be a victory somehow.

This film is a stop motion animation and produced by the same people who did “Shaun the Sheep,” “Run Chicken Run,” and “Wallace and Grommet.” If you love the dry British humor, the friendly faces of stop-motion, and just a good game of futball, you will love this movie.

In theaters Friday, February 16th
