Movie Review: “Ballet 422” Raises The Barre To New Heights Of Artistic Expression

[yasr_overall_rating]

From first rehearsal to world premiere, Ballet 422 takes us backstage at New York City Ballet as emerging choreographer Justin Peck crafts a new work.

Lights! Cameras! Passion! From the moment the film starts, it is unequivocally clear that this is a story about expression, collaboration and determination. The World Famous New York City Ballet, under the artistic direction of Ballet Master in Chief, Peter Martins, has commissioned one of its own, 25-year old Justin Peck to create a new ballet for the company’s 2013 season. Under the leadership of Peck, NYCB’s 90 elite dancers have put their trust into one of the fifty lowest ranked Corps De Ballet dancers to lead them into the future.

Undaunted by the enormousness of the task, Justin flawlessly pulls together a masterpiece in less than two months. With a full orchestra, costume shop, lighting department and production crew at his disposal, Justin works individually, collectively and masterfully with these groups to iron out every intricate detail of the production. Director Jody Lee Lipes has painstakingly captured every step of Peck’s journey, and at the same time, the audience is being educated to the inside world of ballet and the extreme difficulty of running a successful production.

To his credit, Justin is a “hands on” perfectionist whose advice and opinions are grounded in his knowledge of what he’s doing and his ability to work with and through others to achieve success without being overbearing and judgmental. This film is a win-win for the NYCB, Justin Peck and anyone who can appreciate the finest of art in the rarest of forms. The passion of every single person involved will make you appreciate the importance of diversity and the value of trust. Plain and simple, Paz de la Jolla will make you dance!

“Ballet 422” opens Friday, Feb. 20th at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas
