Movie Review: “American Assassin” Goes From A Beach Proposal To A Bloody Massacre In A Matter Of Moments

[yasr_overall_rating]

When Cold War veteran Stan Hurley takes CIA black ops recruit Mitch Rapp under his wing, they receive an assignment to investigate a wave of random attacks on both military and civilian targets.

It is such a beautiful site on the beach as two lovers, Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) and Katrina (Charlotte Vega) playfully court the idea of being together forever, and just as the deal is sealed, and he ventures off to the bar to set up the perfect toast, his life changes forever as shots ring out across the beach and fatally wound the love of his life and injures him as well. While he plots a lifetime of revenge in his hospital bed, Deputy CIA Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) is busy assembling a crew of agents to crack down on terroristic acts being done to the military as well as civilians. After all of his spare time to train as an independent Ninja, Rapp decides that his best recourse and easiest route to his ultimate goal will be to take on duties as a CIA agent. As Cold War veteran (Michael Keaton) takes the new recruit under his wing, he is both mortified and impressed at the inability of his recruit to know when to cease and desist and to decide when it doesn’t matter at all.

As the action-adventure develops, Rapp travels on an international spree, taking part in a mission to track fifteen kilos of plutonium. As bloodshed becomes the order of the day in Boscolo, Stan Hurley becomes increasingly agitated at Rapp and wants to part ways until being caught in his own death trap causes him to realize that having Rapp on his team willingly or unwillingly, isn’t such a bad idea. To complicate matters even worse, Rapp’s partnering with Annika (Sheva Negar), who has a hidden agenda herself, has him on the losing end of the battle until he realizes that he needs her resources and fortitude to complete the mission. While Deputy Director Kennedy is handling internal battles with her agents, she is forced to leverage her authority when the unretrieved weapons threaten to wipe out all of her armed forces and everything she stands for.

Twenty-three-year-old Rapp, who has fought childhood battles which included the loss of his parents at a young age, and then his fiancée, proves to be a force to be reckoned with and makes for a welcoming distraction in a riveting, action-thriller that begs for your attention through every scene. Michael Keaton is wonderful as the increasingly powerful leader, Stan Hurley, who has to relearn everything he has taught his followers and to swallow his ego in order to save his own life. An amazing support cast which includes Scott Adkins (Victor), David Suchet, Taylor Kitsch and Andrew Pleavin help to round out an amazing cast in a film that has something for everyone, but even more for all thrill and action-seekers who are fans of true love and bloodshed alike.

In theaters Friday, September 15th
