Eli Shane is determined to be the greatest Slugslinging hero of them all! Only by collecting, training and dueling with little critters called SLUGS can Eli and his team hope to defeat the forces of evil.
Growing up in the 1970s and the 1980s, we had our Saturday morning cartoons. Shows like Captain Caveman, Scooby Doo, Godzilla and Hong Kong Phooey, to name but a few. Granted, many cartoons from that era are now dated and in some cases, just plain embarrassing but they still remind us of our childhood, gathered around the TVs in our pajamas while eating cereal and delighted that we had no school that day. Today, many of the cartoon shows I’ve seen on TV are obviously better-looking with better graphics and special effects. Indeed, just because they have improved special effects and graphics, doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re a better quality of show.
I refer to Star Wars in this instance. The original trilogy, while cheesy in parts, still holds up much better than the prequels because they had heart and soul. While the prequels were technically far more advanced and visually stunning, the characters and story and emotions, or lack thereof, paled in comparison. I find many of today’s cartoons, even the ones supposedly aimed at younger audiences, too mature for the most part. It doesn’t mean that we need to pander to our younger viewers but produce shows aimed directly at them and for them and they will lap it up. Slugterra is a show I had never heard of before sitting down to review it. There is a different story with each episode and the guns that the characters use throughout, aren’t loaded with bullets or lasers, instead, they use slugs that after having been trained, can do whatever the shooter wants them to do.
When the characters are trapped in a lava cave with no way out, one of them shoots his gun and it’s a slug that can breathe ice in the form of a roadway, thereby giving our heroes a chance to escape. If someone is falling off a cliff, they can shoot a slug that can spew spider webs so our characters will land safely in the web. The thought of slugs being used as ammunition immediately sounds ludicrous and dumb but once you begin to watch the show and get caught up in it, it’s actually refreshing and because they’re slugs and not real ammo, parents don’t need to worry about their younger viewers watching graphic and violent content. After all, what’s the worst a slug can do? Besides dispense ice? Or cobwebs? Or slime?
