Book Review: “Sunshine Beach” Is Unadulterated Balderdash

[yasr_overall_rating]

In this brand-new summer read by Wendy Wax, bestselling author of ‘The House on Mermaid Point,’ three women join forces to bring a historic seaside hotel back to life.

This novel is a mish-mash of characters (all of them wooden) and incidents strung together to build a story to entertain you. We have Maddie, Avery, Nikki and Maddie’s daughter, Kyra, who has a two year-old son, Dustin. In the outlay, the women worked for a TV station and put on a Re-Do show, renovation being the “in” word. The station treats the women very badly and makes them look inept and foolish but we are never really shown, or told, exactly how.

The women decide to produce a show of their own and try to finance it themselves, however, Maddie’s brother Malcolm, has cooked up a ponzi scheme and has stolen all of their money, leaving them very broke indeed. The love lives of these ladies is such a mess I have no intentions of even taking you there. Then we have everyone living in the same house that seems to fill up on a regular basis with ex-husbands and wanna-be lovers.

One day, Kyra goes walking with her son and lo-and-behold…they discover a broken-down hotel, lurking amid overgrown trees and flowers, a structure that, apparently, has not been noticed for fifty years. Naturally, this becomes the building that the women decide to renovate for their new TV show. Owned by a couple of sisters who are still upset because their father was murdered there a long time ago and their mother disappeared the same night, making her the prime suspect!

By the time you get your head around this addition to the story, you may feel like I did, having the urge to toss the book into the nearest ocean. I am sure there is another book lurking around somewhere that might make some sense of this one but I won’t be buying it. This is a stinker!
