Captain Dan Lenson is commanding the first antiballistic-missile-capable cruiser in the US Fleet, the USS Savo Island, and when he is ordered to the Indian Ocean, an explosive showdown begins between India and Pakistan and he is the only one standing between two nations on the brink of the first theater nuclear war.

Captain Dan Lenson is in a heap of trouble. He is commanding the USS Savo Island, the first antiballistic-missile-capable cruiser in the U.S. fleet, and the heads in Washington DC are not happy with him. He is exhausted, his ship is damaged and his crew are not doing all that well. With a start like that, I had to wonder where our captain was going to take us, and since I don’t speak “Navalese,” I had to concentrate really hard at times because author David Poyer does not spare his readers in any way, shape, or form, if you signed on, that’s it, but don’t fret, the journey is worth it.

Our intrepid hero has a mind of his own and uses it which of course lands him in lots of hot water. If you read his books, then you know what to expect, he does not disappoint. His ship is suffering with an unknown sickness that affects his crew and even after a complete scrub down, the problem simmers in the background. When a crew member dies, trying to get through the red tape to get an expert on board to find an answer, proves very difficult. On top of that, a sex pervert is attacking female members of the crew and a tsunami wave nearly turns them over.

He cruises the Indian Ocean, trying to keep shipping lanes safe from pirates (and others), a tremendous amount of cargo passes through and then you have India and Pakistan, snapping and snarling at each other with China putting her nose in where it doesn’t belong.

There is a great deal of detail in Poyer’s story and he tells it expertly. He loves his ship and cares for his crew and watching him control the entire cosmos is like watching a king rule a small country. Poyer is an exceptional writer. He leaves you hanging at the end and I was expecting that, it will take more than one more book to settle the future of the planet. Are we in World War III or not? This is an exciting read and I enjoyed every minute of it.
