With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.
When Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and his partner, Faith Mitchell, are called to a murder scene in a partially refurbished warehouse/nightclub, they discover the corpse of Dale Harding, a 58 year-old ex-cop, well-known for being dirty. There is enough blood at the scene to sink the Titanic and it quickly becomes evident that it didn’t come from Dale’s body alone. Enter Sara Linton, the Medical Examiner and Will’s lover, and the Deputy Director, Amanda Wagner, their boss and you are then drawn into the procedural analysis of a crime scene.
Naturally, author Karin Slaughter throws a spanner in the works by making Will’s estranged wife the possible murder suspect. Will is still smarting from the loss of a case of rape against a famous basketball player who happens to be partners in a consortium of very questionable people who own the club.
The story is unrelenting in its human harshness and you get to process a murder scene in detail and gain insight into the minds of the men and women who work this job. You also get an understanding into the minds of the people trying to solve it too. The details of this complicated story are wonderfully drawn for you but the bedrock of course, is the love story between Will and Sara, in all of the ugliness that is floating around, this has to anchor you or you’re lost.
There are times you need a break but you don’t get one because Slaughter has you in her thrall and she doesn’t let go. There are many themes throughout this book and human relationships are examined and laid bare, and just as casually thrown away.
This is a keeper for the shelf!
