Blu-ray Review: “Wolf Warrior” Delivers Non-Stop Action

A Chinese special force soldier with extraordinary marksmanship is confronted by a group of deadly foreign mercenaries who are hired to assassinate him by a vicious drug lord.

I love Asian action movies and this one is no exception. The stunt people who work on these films are not under the same limitations and insurance restrictions like their Western counterparts, just look at any number of early Jackie Chan movies for proof of that. That’s not to say that they’re careless or reckless, on the contrary, they have an exemplary safety record but they are willing to take more chances and it shows frequently throughout the movie and adds a heightened sense of realism. Wu Jing stars as Sergeant Leng Feng of the Chinese Army, he is a sniper and he is their best. When a hostage situation goes awry, Leng is watching the action through the scope of his rifle and when a captive is being threatened by a gunman, the army and Leng are advised to lower their weapons.

Leng continues to watch the movements of the captor and realizes he has an opportunity to take him out. Not wanting to see any more of his comrades perish, he takes the shot and kills the triggerman. Because of his actions and for disobeying direct orders, he is sentenced to solitary confinement. Shortly after, because of his extraordinary marksmanship, he is transferred to the ‘Wolf Warriors,’ a special branch of the Chinese Special Forces. While playing war games in the wilderness, a group of highly-skilled mercenaries infiltrate the camp and it quickly becomes apparent that they are looking for Leng, seeking revenge for killing the brother of their drug lord boss, the gunman he shot earlier. Now it is up to Leng and his platoon to band together, outsmart the mercs and fight for their lives.

Wu Jing, a national Wushu champion, displays exquisite fluid and rapid body movement and at times, glides seamlessly through the air. His opponent, English actor and martial artist Scott Adkins (“The Expendables 2”), is the perfect match and the finale culminates in an exciting one-on-one battle where East meets West. Mr. Jing also directed the movie and with this being only his second directorial feature, having performed in so many action-oriented films, he obviously paid special attention to the overall structure of making a movie and proves more than capable of handling not just the fighting and action sequences but also a few moments of levity and drama infused throughout. “Wolf Warriors” is well worth a watch.
