Blu-ray Review: “The Venture Bros: Season Five” Is Kind Of, Sort Of Entertaining

The bizarre animated escapades of pseudo-heroic scientist Dr. Rusty Venture, his competent, high strung bodyguard, and his two over-enthusiastic sons.

Um………okay. The Venture Bros, where to begin, where to begin. I’ve gotten a lot of TV shows lately that I have reviewed and most of them I’d never heard of. The Venture Bros. is part of [adult swim] and usually these shows are on late at night or after midnight, like “Family Guy” and “Robot Chicken” so for that reason, it’s not always easy to catch up on episodes. The Venture Bros. depicts the quests of the Venture family: teenagers Hank and Dean Venture, who are totally incompetent but have good intentions; their amateurish and pinheaded wannabe-scientist father, Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture; their bodyguard, Sergeant Hatred and the entire family’s antagonistic arch-enemy, “The Monarch”, a villain so evil, he uses killer butterflies in all of his heinous schemes.

I honestly had no idea what to make of this show. I didn’t hate it but at the same time, I couldn’t quite bring myself to like it. Well not too much anyway. It felt like I was in Limbo. Usually, if I watch a show which is termed a ‘comedy’ and I don’t laugh, then it has failed and it will get a not-so-good review. Here though, while I didn’t laugh out loud once, I did chuckle once or twice but that was because of some visual sight gags that referenced other classic movies like Indiana Jones, Star Wars and James Bond. The Monarch is accompanied by his beautiful and sexy wife, Dr. Girlfriend, a masculine-voiced beauty that when I initially heard her/him speak, made me shake my head in absolute confusion.

The Venture Bros. is now in its fifth season and because it’s [adult swim] oriented, it is rated for mature audiences and has some racy and vulgar language and situations. I’m giving it this review because it left me thinking about it long after I had turned it off. Maybe I might go back to the beginning and watch it from the start, who knows, maybe I might even begin to like it. Just a little bit.
