Blu-ray Review: “Mine” Is An Exciting Film That Doesn’t Need Action To Keep You On Edge

After a failed assassination attempt, a soldier finds himself stranded in the desert. Exposed to the elements, he must survive the dangers of the desert and battle the psychological and physical tolls of the treacherous conditions.

There are a lot of war movies that are cheaply made and have horrible plots. When I received “Mine” starring Armie Hammer as the main character, I thought the same, it would be no different than those type of films. The premise was simple, after a botched assassination attempt, Mike, played by Hammer, and his spotter, attempt to rendezvous with command at a nearby village in order to obtain support and get extracted from the area. The arc comes into play when Mike and his spotter both step on a landmine.

Before going into the film, I skimmed through reviews and the consensus was too much like a similar film, “Buried.” The reviews framed it as a film with a great premise but also as one that failed to reach that premise. I have to disagree. “Mine” is a film that takes apart a man’s life in a small amount of time. Although it doesn’t go into detail, you are thrown into this character’s life in a way that is relatable and down to earth. In the middle of the film, at its quiet moments, I found it to be more exciting and suspenseful that even the most violent and daring movies that immersed themselves in wartime conflict. “Mine” takes the idea of living, it takes the idea of reflection and analyzing your mistakes and it sits it on top of an IED and demands you interact with it all before your end.

Armie Hammer does an incredible job at executing the victim of that premise. His partner, Tommy (played by Tom Cullen) seems to be disposable at the beginning but takes on a vital role near the middle of the film and really makes his character a favorite. All in all, “Mine” is a fantastic movie worth your time. Who cares if it’s been done before, as long as it’s a good film.
