A band of samurai set out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun.
While hunting in the forest, Lord Asano of Ako and his samurai find a young half-breed and take him with them to live in the castle. Several years later, Lord Asano holds a tournament to welcome the Shogun to Ako. The night after the tournament, Lord Asano is bewitched into hurting Lord Kira of Nagato, and is punished into committing seppuku by the Shogun. Realizing that it was a Lord Kira’s evil plot, the samurais and the half-breed sets out for revenge against the Shogun’s order.
Keanu Reeves is an actor who likes to select his movies carefully. Unlike so many other actors of his ilk who will take whatever comes their way, mostly for financial gain, Mr. Reeves has been in the business since 1984 and has had his fair share of big Hollywood blockbusters (“Speed”, “Point Break”, “The Matrix” trilogy) so he has earned the right to be more selective. When “47 Ronin” was first released, it was labelled a flop right out of the gate. People were saying it was atrocious and a really bad movie. Well I’ve got news for you. They’re wrong. It’s what a movie is supposed to be: magical, full of spectacular special effects, good guys, really bad guys, a tremendous-looking dragon and a love story all rolled into one.
Granted, that’s just my opinion but as a filmmaker, a film buff and a film reviewer, I know what makes for good entertainment and “47 Ronin” is thoroughly enjoyable. Keanu Reeves appears to be having a blast in a mystical land full of hidden treasures, sorcerous magic and eerie primeval forests and it is great fun for the entire family.
